Advanced Search Help

Advanced search uses a combination of entered keywords along with time frame and sorting parameters to search the chosen categories. Searching a single category will be faster and display more results.

Keywords:

Meets All: The search requires all keyword groups (all, phrase, any, without) specifications be met.
Meets Any: The search requires any keyword group (all, phrase, any) specification be met.
Note: The "Without the words" group specification must always be met.

Keywords can be entered into 4 groups:

  1. With all of the words:
All of these words must be in the text to return results.

  2. With the exact phrase:
A phrase exactly matching this entry must be found to return results. Only one phrase is allowed, no need for quotes.
Double quotes are not allowed within the entry.

  3. With any of the words:
Any of these words can be in the text to return results.

  4. Without the words:
Returns results that do not include any of these words.
Note: This group must accompany another group.
Delimiting words:
With exception of Exact Phrase group, which searches for a phrase exactly as it was entered, the rest of the groups take a delimited list of words. Acceptable delimiters are: space, comma, colon, and semicolon.

Quick Search:
When entering text from the left navigation Search box, you can either enter delimited words, which will be added internally to the "With any of the words" group, or you can encompass an exact phrase in double quotes, which will place the phrase in the "With the exact phrase" group for the search.

Noise words:
With the exception of the Exact Phrase group, noise words are words like: is, and, the, etc. are automatically pulled out of the search specification to produce a more descriptive search.

Categories:

Select "All Categories" or any combination of the available categories. Single category searches will produce paged results with more entries.
Time Frame:

Time Frame only applies to the Articles and Publications categories.

Pick from the following:
Sorting:

Results can be sorted by 2 methods:
  1. Relevance or Date:
Relevance pertains to how many of the specified keyword matches were found. Sorting by date only affects Articles and publications, the rest of the categories will default to sort by relevance.

  2. Descending/Ascending:
Descending sorts the results by most relevant to least relevant (default setting) or latest date to earliest date. Ascending sorts by least relevant to most relevant (not very useful) or earliest date to latest date.

Note: if you pick Articles or Publications along with other non-time dependent categories, then sort by date ascending, the non-time dependent categories will be sorted by relevance ascending, which will not be very useful.
